The court said in its ruling which was pronounced on Thursday that the 45 accused (in three separate cases) will be deported after serving their jail terms. However, he added, the convicted workers have the right to appeal against the court verdict within a period of two weeks.

The labourers were convicted on charges of vandalism, breaching public security and for their involvement in instigating public disturbances late last year.

The government has revised the labour law to include requirements that employers pay for migrant workers’ travel, employment permits, medical tests and health care.

It has also closed down some workers’ camps that do not meet health and safety standards in a crackdown on firms abusing foreign workers.
