RAS AL KHAIMAH — The Ras Al Khaimah municipality on Tuesday ordered a two-day closure of a major restaurant here and slapped a fine of Dh5,000 on its owner for selling contaminated pizzas.
The restaurant specialises in fast food items.
Mubarak Ali Al Shamsi, Chairman of the Ras Al Khaimah Municipality, said a local resident had lodged a complaint to the municipality’s Health Department that the restaurant had served him with pizzas that contained small pieces of iron materials resembling broken nails.
The official added that municipal health inspectors examined the pizza brought by the complainant and found out that small pieces of nail-like materials were indeed present in the pizza.
According to Adil Ali Al Deek, chief of the Health and Environment Department at Ras Al Khaimah Municipality, these iron particles that got mixed with the grilled meat might have come from the restaurant’s grinding equipment, as they were old and worn-out.
He said using very old and worn-out equipment in preparing food in restaurants and other food outlets was a violation of municipal rules and regulations.
