"A number of residents of the country have been notified of winning the prize, which of course is not true. The 'winners' have been asked to transfer small amounts of money in order to obtain the prize,"Mr Sanchez said.

He said: "It has been brought to our notice that residents in the UAE are receiving through the Internet or via normal post, offers from companies abroad, stating that they trade with Spanish lottery. Some of them also go to the extent of stating that the recipients are the winners of a prize for which they have to pay a certain amount of money as 'taxes'."

The embassy released general information on the Spanish lottery, clarifying that the lottery and other gambling activities specially the Primitiva Lottery and El Gordo La Primitiva, are exclusively controlled by State Lottery and Gambling Entity which comes under the Spanish Ministry of Finance. Before winning a prize in the said lottery, tickets need to be bought first. According to Mr Sanchez the only possibility of legally obtaining any such lottery is through the Official Establishment regulated by the State Lottery and Gambling Entity which does not promote such gambles outside Spain and has no relations or links whatsoever with companies which offer to send such prizes to UAE residents.
