The tests are part of an ongoing awareness campaign where more than 28,000 people were screened for conditions such as diabetes andblood pressure.

Clinicians used body mass index, a number derived from a person’s height to weight ratio, to determineweight categories.

Humaid Al Qutami, the UAE Minister of Health, said the campaign helped increase awareness of health issues.

“This campaign is part of a series of public campaigns by the ministry in cooperation with the private sector and is aimed at strengthening the environmental health of residents in the UAE,” said Qutami.

Many of the conditions the health ministry screened for were lifestyle diseases — conditions that can be managed through a healthier diet or more physical activity.

Obesity can cause other health problems such as diabetes, a condition which 19.6 per cent of the UAE population suffers from.

The ministry recently announced a database that will track conditions of Emirati diabetics. The database will be available to doctors and clinicians with the hope that it will streamline and speed up the care provided todiabetic patients.
