They say that such unhealthy practices are not only posing a threat to public health but also damaging environment. A section of the residents say that the delay in clearing garbage bins by the municipal authorities was forcing the residents to dump the garbage outside the bins attracting rodents and flies.

Omar Al Tayeb, a resident of Al Butaina area behind Qurtuba restaurant, complained that the garbage and food wastes are piling up in the container kept close to the doorsteps of his building.

The municipal authorities should take note of this problem and start the process of clearing the bins several times a day, he said adding that residents should also take care to see that the garbage is dumped right inside the bins.

“The solution to this problem requires massive awareness programmes highlighting the importance of the environment protection,” he pointed out.

Zinnat Khan, resident of Al Mussalah, said that domestic waste dumped outside the containers located near the parking lot of her residential area is emanating bad odour much to the annoyance of the residents in the vicinity.

Lana Ameer said that the municipality should prepare special plans to prevent the accumulation of domestic garbage dumped in various areas of the emirate during the holy month of Ramadan to prevent the spread of diseases.

Officials from Environment Protection Section (EPS) of Sharjah Municipality said that the volume of domestic food wastes in Sharjah had increased during Ramadan by over 70 per cent when compared to the normal days.

The officials said that the municipal staff would clear the garbage bins twice a day to prevent accumulation of the garbage outside the bins during the Ramadan.

A municipal officer, speaking to Khaleej Times, said that housemaids dump waste outside the containers exposing it to stray dogs and flies. He said that supervisors and workers of the civic body were working round-the-clock to ensure cleanliness in the city.

The municipality will impose fines on those who litter food waste or garbage in any part of the emirate, he said.

The municipality is also making efforts to spread awareness among residents on the need to maintain cleanliness and safe way of disposing the waste, he added.
