DUBAI — The possible support by the United Arab Emirates to the Bahraini proposal of fixing the residency cap for unskilled workers at the Doha summit in December will be a step to uphold the concept of temporary labour power.
Minister of Labour Dr. Ali bin Abdullah Al Ka’abi had recently stated that at the summit the UAE would support a Bahraini proposal of a six-year residency cap.
According to a senior official from the Ministry of Labour (MoL), the move will help diversify the work force imported into the country.
Assistant Undersecretary in MoL Humaid bin Deemas said, “If the proposal is adopted the three-year residency will be renewable for another three years. After completing six years, the worker will have to leave UAE but can still come back after several months under a new contract.”
