Brigadier Obaid Al Shamsi, head of the anti-drug section, said that the centre is making efforts in providing necessary treatment and awareness for its patients. The centre has succeeded in treating completely 20 per cent of addicts admitted to the centre since its establishment.

He said the medical staff at the centre are currently using advanced methods to conduct tests on the addicts who approach the centre for the first time. The test determined the percentage of quantity of the drug in the blood of the addict.

Most of the patients are being brought by their parents and referred by police to the centre following their arrest.

The centre is not only providing treatment to drug addicts but also an increasing number of alcoholics.

Addicts are admitted to the centre if they meet the conditions set by the police department, which include that the age of the patients shouldn’t be less than 18 and should be UAE nationals or from Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

For security reasons, addicts from other nationalities will be admitted only if they are referred to by police.

Brig Al Shamsi said the Sharjah police department is working hard to enhance the services provided to the addicts in the centre, including follow up and implementation of advanced techniques and methods in treating the addicts.

The centre has been cooperating with various international organisations concerned about addicts to learn and benefit from their experience to enhance its capabilities and rehabilitation and treatment programmes.
