Speaking to Khaleej Times, Mohamed Abdullah Al Basous, deputy director of Rents Administration at the department stressed that under the rent law, real estate offices were not authorised to handle the issue of renting or advertising for mortgaged buildings even if they have the approval of the landlord.

He cautioned that if these offices get involved in hiring or marketing this type of buildings, they would be subject to legal action as stipulated in the rent laws.

Basous underlined that the department has the right to lease mortgaged buildings to big companies and establishments, which have the capacity to pay the rent value without delay. Otherwise, all leases processing has to be carried out via the raffle draw system, he said.
