The delegation, headed by Dr Saleh Moussa, Director of Emergency and Relief Department of the society, travelled by land from Amman. It took the delegation 17 hours to reach the needy. Upon arrival, the delegation procured relief items from the local market, where prices are currently sky-rocketing as a result of the war.

"Despite the risk which we had to undertake, and despite high prices of commodities in Baghdad, we had to come here and purchase relief goods for our brethren who are now subjected to untold suffering as a result of the current situation. This is in line with the instructions of our leadership to do everything within our power to alleviate the suffering of the civilians population," said Dr Moussa in a statement to the Emirates News Agency.

He said the delegation had purchased relief goods for about 5,000 families and had also conducted meetings with the Iraqi Red Crescent Society to asses further humanitarian needs.

Meanwhile, the head of the Iraqi RCS, Dr Hisham Salman Al Sadoun, praised the efforts of the UAE's RCS, saying that it was the only relief body in the Arab world, and indeed in the world, which had come to the assistance of the Iraqi people.
