The truckloads are the first batch of humanitarian aid, the UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS) has vowed to send to the Iraqi people in a bid to alleviate their ordeal.

As the trucks crossed the border into Iraq, a RCS delegation, headed by Dr Saleh Al Taie, had returned by road from Baghdad on Friday night after spending four days there. The truckloads consist of 20 tonnes of sugar, 30 tonnes of rice, 1,500 cartons of macaroni and 2,400 bottles of vegetable oil. The trucks were expected to arrive in Baghdad yesterday night for Iraq Red Crescent Society to distribute their loads among the associations as agreed with the RCS.

The RCS delegation headed to Baghdad last Tuesday from Jordan. The delegation held various meetings with Iraqi officials in medical and health fields, and reached an agreement with Hisham Al Saadon, the Chief of the Iraq Red Crescent, to implement the "UAE Charity Bread " project which will cost $87.5 million.

Under the agreement, the UAE RCS should provide flour to Baghdad, enough for making about 10,000 loaves daily for distribution to hospitals , orphanages and social welfare bodies in various areas of Iraq.

The UAE RCS visited a number of hospitals in Baghdad and distributed token gifts among the injured victims of the US bombardment.

Also, the RCS distributed packages of medicine for use in emergency surgical operations at any spot. The RCS delegation is supposed to return to Abu Dhabi today.
