The activities to be organised on Wednesday at the Marina Mall in Abu Dhabi are aimed at highlighting the significance of the voluntary service in achieving the daily targets represented in protecting human dignity and spreading the principles of voluntary work.

Khalifa Nasser Al Suweidi, Chairman of the board of the UAE RCA, noted that May 8 represents a watershed in the international movement of the Red Crescent and Red Cross.

“It requires unification of efforts of all bodies for a better future. There is no doubt that to allocate a day to celebrate such a day is considered a chance to share opinions and hold discussions about the fundamental issues in which the Red Crescent and Red Cross movement are interested,” Suweidi noted in his message.

"It is an occasion for self-evaluation and to evaluate the whole march of the RCRCA and to prompt pushing it forward. This day also contributes actively to endorse the programmes and to spread values and principles we endeavour to achieve,” he added.

There is no doubt that choosing the theme, 'The global aid through volunteers', for this year underlines the great appreciation of the role played by volunteers to enrich and enhance the humanitarian issue.

May 8 marks the anniversary of the birth of Henry Dunant, Swiss national and the founder of the Red Cross. The occasion offers an opportunity for the members of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent movement to celebrate the power of humanity.

In 1859, Dunant witnessed himself the battle of Solferino between Italy and France, which resulted in a large number of injured and dead. He called for forming a national association to take care of the wounded of this battle. It was established in 1863 and is now known as Red Cross International Committee.
