Dr Sameer Hamarna, Consultant Surgeon & Head of Digestive System Endoscope in Saqr Hospital, said that this patient was near death. Before diagnosis, Hernad was suffering a big swell in his stomach, with often-painful contractions.

However, he was considered an emergency case when he was examined by the doctor on duty in Saqr Hospital. The doctor recommended a further check by the colon endoscope, where he found a clear case of intestine blockage that led to severe swelling in the stomach, along with the painful contractions.

Dr Sameer, who led the medical team, clarified that the blockage was the result of the abnormal size of the colon.

The doctor said: “The patient was lucky, because the intestine blockage could have caused gangrene if it continued for a longer time, as the huge colon was blocking blood, which was going to lead to his death sooner or later."

The operation took around an hour, as Dr Sameer used the latest medical equipment to untie the intestines, and then amputate the extra part of the colon, which weights almost 2kg with the length of 60cm.

Regarding the reasons for such a case, he clarified that it was the result of an abnormal movement of the colon, or the colon twisting around itself.

Dr Sameer said that regardless of the cause of the colon twist, these cases still remain rare, as there were only five cases recorded during the last 20 years.
