The accident took place on Saturday evening in an improvised makeshift wooden building located near the Islamic Institute in the old city.
Eyewitnesses said that they suddenly saw columns of smoke billowing out of the building and construction workers screaming and fleeing for safety.
The fire turned the building into a heap of blackened wood and rubble. Rescue teams from RAK Civil Defence Department (RCDD) rushed to the site and brought the fire under control.
The RCDD referred the case to the Criminal Investigation Laboratory of RAK Police Department to find out its cause.
A top official at RCDD warned companies against providing its labour with residences made of wood which might pose serious safety hazards to them.
The accident was the second of its kind to have occurred in the emirate during the last month. The first one took place in another labour compound in Al Maireed area.
The authorities here are also investigating a third fire accident that took place in a house last Friday evening. The blaze destroyed the furniture of a bedroom in the house located in Al Jolan area.
