India will see its first uterine transplant on May 18 in Pune's Galaxy Laparoscopy Institute, (GCLI).

The Pune hospital will be the first to perform the procedure in the country. A Bengaluru hospital is poised to follow suit with two uterine transplants in June on two women born without a uterus.

According to a News Nation report, the patients will be monitored closely for six months before the operation. The Pune hospital has been licensed by the Directorate of Health Services, Maharashtra to conduct such operations for the next five years.

So far, 25 such transplants have been conducted all over the world, with the first successful one taking place in Sweden in 2013.
