Millions of rupees were pledged by the members of the Pakistani community on Saturday at an Iftar-dinner presentation of the chairty's performance and plans. Organised by Haji Abdul Razzak, Chairman of ARY Group, the presentation was attended among others by leading Pakistani businessman Sadruddin Hashwani, comedian Omar Sharif and former cricketer Waqar Younus.

Abrar said that Sahara was set up to serve the unserved people of Pakistan. Its first project Sughra Shafi Medical Complex has been completed in the rural area of Narowal, 120 km from Lahore, at a cost of Rs120 million, he said, adding that it is being operated as a best practices model.

According to Abrar, more than 126,000 patients have been treated at the 120-bed hospital free of cost. It focuses on mother and child care, reproductive health, mental health and infectious diseases. In addition to specialists clinics, the hospital has developed active linkages with the leading medical centres in Pakistan to provide tertiary healthcare facilities to its patients.

Abrar said he aimed to create an endowment fund of Rs500 million for the smooth functioning of the hospital and to improve the effectiveness of its activities. The commissioning of the indoor treatment is delayed due to paucity of funds.
