Ms Sison's speech at the opening of a three-day workshop on ‘Media development strategies for the Middle east and North Africa', jointly organised by the International Research & Exchange Board (IREX), the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) and the US Embassy, cited the Media City in Dubai as an excellent opportunity for the development of media in the region.

Journalists, publishers, broadcasters, editors and executives from the print and electronic media and NGOs in the region are attending the workshop which will give a chance to discuss the opportunities and challenges faced by independent media in the region for the establishment of sustainable media development.

The workshop will also provide an opportunity to share the success in media development in the Middle East and other regions.

Ms Sison expressed hope that the workshop would help in creating a two-way exchange process that would help the US to understand the situation in the region, besides providing technical assistance to the media through IREX.

These are exciting times as development in all sectors is taking place, the civil society is opening, education is growing and the region is making industrial and technical progress, said Ms Sison who has been only one month in the job as ambassador of the United States.

Ross Kapmann of the US State Department, while welcoming the participants, said that the workshop would enable a frank and open discussion and exchange of information that would lead to better understanding to create a sustainable strategy for the future and cooperation between the US and the media in the region.

Mark Kenny of the United Stated Aid Development Agency said the workshop would help in stressing the role of media in the economic development in the region. He was confident that the delegates would make the best of the opportunity.

Saeed Aslam, Director at the Casablanca-based Centre for Media Freedom Middle East and North Africa, applauded the initiative and said it was a first step towards the creation of a sustainable media strategy. He highlighted the outcome of the workshop.

Aslam would also be the co-coordinator during the three days of the workshop.
