Brigadier Mohammed Humaid Al Suwaidi, Director of the General Administration of Punitive Establishments, said Christian inmates celebrated Christmas and “this is in the context of religious tolerance and freedom of worship”. He said Dubai Police provides inmates with facilities to meet their religious and spiritual needs. “Prisons have inmates of different races and religious, we have Muslims, Christians, Hindus and others, and all are treated the same way under the law of the land”, said Brig. Al Suwaidi.

“We as Muslims believe in brotherhood and co-existence among followers of all religions. All inmates have the freedom of practising their religious rituals in a way that does not violate the laws”, he added. The official said inmates celebrate Christmas every year and police provide them with possible facilities to mark the occasion.

He said the freedom of worship had been guaranteed by Dubai Police prisons for a very long time. This, he underlined, has led to a decrease in the number of violations and brought peace.
