In a barbaric incident, a 32-year-old pregnant woman from Odisha was allegedly beaten to death by three supervisors of a brick kiln when she failed to report for work in Hanmanthupeta village in Peddapalli mandal of Karimnagar district.
Surjo Zara, hailing from Ballipouda in Kalahandi district of Odisha, was four months pregnant, and she did not go to work since she was not feeling well on Thursday. The supervisors of the brick kiln, according to police sources, were given to beating up the workers if they do not report for work. They had assaulted Zara three days ago too when she could not attend work. She and her husband had come to Peddapalli in search of work four weeks back. The couple has three children. The family and relatives of the dead woman and other workers staged a protest in front of the Assistant Labour Commissioner's office demanding compensation.
According to Zara's husband Jithen, his wife could not go to work since she had been down with fever for two days.
"There are no medical facilities at the kiln. The supervisors assaulted my wife for not coming to work on Thursday. I begged them not to beat her and asked them to thrash me. But they brutally kicked her stomach and beat her up with sticks and plastic pipes. She was injured seriously and died on the spot," he said.
Peddapalli SI A Jaganmohan said that a case of suspicious death was booked based on a complaint filed by the victim's husband. "We are inquiring from all angles regarding the incident," the police said.
