One of the defendants pleaded not guilty to the assault charges while the other two failed to appear in court on Monday. Their lawyer said they were on a pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

The incident happened in June this year. The court has adjourned the case to next month.

On June 13, the Canadian couple went to a restaurant to have their dinner and they sat at a table near the window.

While the Canadian woman, who was eight-months-pregnant, and her husband were eating, the three accused, aged 52, 33 and 43, approached them.

One of them asked them to move saying they had already reserved the table and pointed to his three children who were sitting at the other end of the table.

The woman’s husband was then attacked from behind and knocked to the ground before the two other men joined in the assault. The ‘attackers’ then continued to beat him up till security personnel arrived.

At the court hearing the woman said that she was in her last month of pregnancy. “I told the suspects that I am pregnant and couldn’t move to another table but one of the men told me to be quiet and then assaulted my husband. I tried to help him but then I was punched in the face and I fell to the floor,” she said. The Canadian woman suffered injuries to her jaw. She and her husband spent 20 days getting treated.

The court heard how the three men had kicked and hit the couple until the security intervened.

Bribery case

A 39-year-old Egyptian security guard and a 35-year-old Bangladeshi worker were charged by the Dubai Public Prosecution with bribery after the police set a trap to nab the accused.

The security guard at the Dubai Municipality asked a 49-year-old Iraqi employee to pay Dh3,000 in order to issue him a medical fitness certificate for a Bangladeshi employee of the company he was representing. He said the Bangladeshi worker was to pay Dh3,000 for a fitness certificate.

The Bangladeshi worker has confessed to his crime and said the first defendant had promised to give him Dh1,000 and he had agreedto the ‘deal’.
