Residents complained that the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA) emergency number, when contacted, had an official saying he had no clue to the problem but assured that efforts were being made to restore power supply.

Several shops in the area lit candles and most of the shops remained empty because of lack of customers.

A resident of a building in Rolla's Bank Street area complained that her little children grew restless and uncomfortable at home without electricity.

“During a hot day in the summer month, it is unbearable to cope without power for so many hours,” she said, urging the authorities to take necessary measures to ensure no power breakdown occurs during the summer months.

Another resident said that he had to rush home early from work so that he could take his children out because the heat had become unbearable at home.

“I remained out all evening with my family in the hope that power would be restored soon,” said N. Raghavan, “but it's 8pm and there is no sign of power supply being restored.”

SEWA officials, when contacted, assured that power would be restored by 9pm.

A SEWA official disclosed that the outage was due to a problem with the transformer in the area. “Necessary repair work is under way and power will be restored soon,” he assured.
