Ironically, the accident happened as police patrols were preparing posters and other road safety awareness materials for early morning distribution in various parts of the city as part of a campaign that started on August 2 and is to continue until the end of the month.

The 45-year-old man was rushed to a hospital after his car overturned on Al Ittihad Road, coming from Al Garhoud tunnel towards Sharjah.

The spot had witnessed many accidents in the past.

Police identified the man as R.S., from an Asian country.

Officers said the accident took place around 3:20am and police cars rushed to the accident site easily as there was no heavy traffic. Policemen and ambulance teams examining the injured man and the wreckage of the vehicle were certain the man was drinking in the car before the accident occurred.

Sources said police officials noticed smell of liquor as the man was being taken away from the wreckage of the car. He was taken to the emergency unit of Rashid Hospital and the sources said he had sustained multiple slight injuries.

Police said the accident showed drunken driving remained a traffic problem which required public involvement in safety campaigns to succeed.
