Police patrols had kept a close watch as the workers started the rally around 7.15am inside Ekad residential city in Musafah Industrial Area, Lieutenant-Colonel Tareq Al Ghoul, Director of Musafah police station, said.

The workers demanded kitchens inside the compound where they can cook or increase in their salaries so that they can eat from restaurants and other food outlets. Police called a representative from the Ministry of Labour and negotiated with the workers, asking them not to take to violence.

The workers agreed and nominated eight representatives who participated in talks with executives of the company at the police station. The meeting granted the company a grace period to study the workers’ demands.

Earlier, Mousafah police, in collaboration with the security and safety officials in Ekad residential city, inspected the accommodation units of the workers, where they found them cooking.

Since cooking in the units could cause fire, the utensils and appliances were seized, he said.

A company official said the issue has been resolved and all workers will return to work on Tuesday.
