Maitha bin Adai, CEO of Traffic and Roads Agency, explained that widening works completed under this stage are part of a comprehensive project currently being undertaken to widen Emirates Road from three to six lanes in each direction. It covers a sector starting from Arabian Ranches Roundabout to the outskirts of Sharjah.

“By completing this second stage, the project is now about to be completed in full. The first phase had already been completed in August last year in which widening works extending 12km from the border line of the emirate of Sharjah to Al Aweer Junction had been completed. Phase III, which is the final phase of the project and extends 10km from the entrance and exits of the Global Village to the Arabian Ranches Roundabout, is expected to be opened in April,” said Maitha.

“The aim of the project, which started in June 2006 at a cost exceeding Dh333 million, is to widen Emirates Road which is considered one of the busiest highways in the whole region. It is a vital inter-emirates traffic corridor as it accommodates around 10,000 vehicles per hour in each direction and has therefore to be developed to avoid traffic bottlenecks at peak hours at certain sectors,” she added.
