Hussain Nasser Lootah, Acting Director-General of Dubai Municipality, said yesterday that there had been a big increase in the number of trucks with foodstuff arriving in Dubai during the past few years. The number of foodstuff companies had also doubled.

He was speaking during the inauguration of the 3rd Dubai International Food Safety Conference.

“These developments have prompted us to review the food control and safety aspects. The Dubai Municipality recently set up a new department for food control to cope with the increase in the number of foodstuff companies in Dubai. It has also started having closer partnership with the private sector by organising such international conferences,” he said.

“This region has a diverse range of policies on food safety. This conference is a great chance for countries to work together and set a precedent to ensure consumers that the food they are eating is safe and of a high quality no matter where they are in the region,” said Lootah.

Welcoming the 700-odd participants, Lootah said the event had grown to overcome many challenges, adding that the third edition of the conference would discuss a wide range of issues in the field of food safety accompanied by many a good variety of programmes including “Meet the Expert” and “Tackle the issue.”
