As many as 195,113 transfer work permits were issued over the last three years, according to a Ministry of Labour report.

Last year saw the bulk of them — 72,059. In 2011 the number was 62,178 and 59,876 in 2012.

The number of temporary work permits stood at 58,176, there were 10,391 part-time work permits. Work permits issued to those who are on their parents’ visa stood at 106,478, while the number of work permits for teenagers was 600.

The ministry said the part-time work permit service, which came into force at the beginning of 2011, symbolised the ministry’s policy to inject more flexibility in the labour market and meet employers’ need for available and efficient workers without hiring workers from outside the country. This resulted in reducing the cost of employment.

The report set the conditions and rules for obtaining temporary work permits. The applicant should have a valid labour card and be under 65.

The beneficiaries of the temporary work permit include government employees, 18-year-old students, and girls who are on their parents’ visa, husbands and children of Emirati women.
