According to sources, Pakistan approached the Abu Dhabi government for acquiring the thermal power plants, following which Abu Dhabi as a goodwill gesture donated thermal power turbines with a total capacity of 320 MW. It consists of six gas turbines with a total of 240 MW capacity and five gas turbines worth 80 MW. Although they were being used, they are reportedly in excellent condition. The Abu Dhabi government has further decided to bear $50 million as the cost of dismantling, transportation and installation and commissioning of the turbines in Pakistan. Pakistan is currently facing severe power shortage. The metropolitan cities like Karachi and Lahore often face hours of power cuts. Thirteen gas turbines will be installed in a couple of years.
