Over 20,000 employees ‘abscond’ in 7 months

ABU DHABI — A total of 20,157 employees were reported absconding with labour authorities across the emirates in the first seven months of the year.

According to figures released by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, the number of absconding employees in Abu Dhabi was 7112, Al Ain 1404 and Madinat Zayed 80. Dubai reported 6810 workers while in Sharjah, the figure was 2971. In the port city of Khorfakkan, 87 workers were absconding, while in Ras Al Khaimah, 460 workers were reported absconding. Ajman reported 774 workers as absconding, Fujairh 248 and Umm Al Quwain 151.

Meanwhile, labour offices throughout the country registered 9,900 complaints of various kinds.

Pending wages topped the list with 4,170 complaints lodged over unpaid salaries followed by legal entitlements. Out of the 3,246 complaints lodged in Abu Dhabi, 1,360 were over unpaid salaries while 352 complaints related to legal entitlements.

In the city of Al Ain, 720 complaints were filed with the labour office, out of which 408 complaints were over unpaid wages.The Labour Office in Dubai received 3,354 complaints topped by unpaid salaries at 1,502. In Sharjah, 1,440 complaints were filed, out of which 443 pertained to unpaid salaries and 293 complaints were related to legal entitlements.
