On display will be works by names like Manu Parekh, Ahmed Shahabuddin, Seema Kohli, Ahmed Khan, Alka Raghuvanshi, Wahab Jaffer, Satadru Sovan Banduri, Maya Burman, Pratibha Singh and Nupur Kundu. The collection will include various forms: abstract, figuration, expressionism, decorative pieces and landscapes all in different sizes. “There is something for everyone,” says Ambika Vohra, director, Art Select. Art Select is organising the show - that will open on February 15, and continue till the 21st - in collaboration with the Grand Hyatt, Dubai.

Amidst a global credit crunch, artwork that comes with hefty pricetags can deter customers. “Many new art collectors are intimidated by incredibly high prices,” points out Kanika Subberwal, owner of Art Select. “We want to let them know that one doesn’t have to spend a fortune to own an original painting.”

Khaleej Times spoke to a couple of artists whose works will be showcased. Mumbai-based artist Mazarine Memon says that her works abstract female figures - are drawn from “inner feelings of women and the barring layers of society” and that she’s tried to penetrate a woman’s rigidly defined social roles: that of mother, daughter, sister, wife.

Karachi-based Wahab Jaffer attributes the generous use of brilliant hues to his teacher. “My technique is influenced by the late Ahmed Pervaiz, also known as the ‘art jeweller’ of Pakistan,” he says. While focusing on the figure, he also combines a fierce zest for life on the face with gentle playfulness in the eyes.
