The crash brought traffic to a standstill for more than three hours.

Police and civil defence sources said that the truck which was carrying debris from a demolition site hit the waste collection vehicle after jumping the red signal, according to preliminary investigations. The driver of the debris truck was injured and rushed to the Khalifa Hospital for treatment. His condition is said to be stable.

The accident took place at 8.30am in front of Abu Dhabi Municipality building. It caused a partial closure of the Al Salam-Al Falah intersection. Traffic moved at a snail’s pace till around noon when the road was cleared. Sources said civil defence did not have a crane that could tow away the truck with loads in excess of 100 tonnes. The Civil Defence then had to seek the help of a crane vehicle from the same private firm that owned the vehicle causing the accident.

Lieutenant Ali Al Jabri of Abu Dhabi Police said the cause of the accident was the vehicle carrying the debris had jumped the red light and in doing so rammed into the waste collection vehicle from the rear. There was also damage to traffic lights and the pavement.

The police officer said the debris vehicle was coming from Al Salam Street and because of high speed at which it was travelling the driver could not control the vehicle in time.
