The man, a journalist by profession, said he and his family lived in a small one-bedroom flat and their water consumption bill for one month averaged around Dh200.

He claimed it was impossible for him to consume the amount of water for which he had been charged, as his family consisted of himself, his wife and their son who is not yet five.

Stunned by the amount shown in the bill, he reported the matter to the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) to find out the reason. He told the man at the counter that their consumption of water, ever since they moved into this flat, had never exceeded Dh200. The hefty bill, which he received for one month, would have been justified only if he had set up a farm at his flat, the complainant said.

After a two-hour argument, the man lodged a complaint requesting the authority to check the water meter.

The investigation of the matter proved that a mistake had been made while taking the meter reading — the reading shown on the complainant’s bill had been taken from the water meter for another apartment housing three families.

The journalist claimed to have come across at least 10 people making similar complaints during his visit to the office of the authority. Most of the complainants received the same reply: “Sorry, it was an inadvertent mistake.”
