Onam celebrated with traditional fervour in Garden City

THE annual celebration of Onam, the harvest festival of Kerala, is one of the highlights of the Indian Social Club (Al Ain) calendar and last Thursday evening witnessed a spectacular cultural show in the main auditorium.

Over 1,000 guests were enthralled by a programme of song, dance and musical numbers in which the skill of the performers was greatly enhanced by the colourful costumes and traditional instruments.

On this occasion, the evening was generously sponsored by Thani Murshid (Rainbow Milk), Dr V.K. Shahul Hameed, and Lailat Al Zaffa Trading.

Preceding the entertainment was the judging of the traditional floral decoration competition.

The winning team in the ladies' section was Bindu Sanand, (Capt), Avinash Kaur Bakshi and Jigna Bhavsar.

The junior section was open to young ladies in the pre-15 age range. Winners were Arya Krishnan, (Capt), Aswathy Kannan, Nasriya Naseem and Sharon Sebastian.

On Friday, a traditional Onam Feast was held over the lunch hours at the ISC premises.

Over 400 attended, including VIP representatives from all sections of the Indian community in the Garden City.

Getting into the S(w)ing of Things

The first convocation and rehearsal of the Al Ain Choral Society's new season will be held in the InterContinental Hotel on Saturday, September 20, from 7.30pm to 9pm. The choir will continue under the direction of Martha Griffin.

No formal musical experience is required and aspiring tenors and basses will be made most welcome.
