The Court of First Instance found the 28-year-old Bangladeshi police officer guilty of abusing his power and taking possession of two vehicles belonging to Dubai Police worth about Dh88,500.

He was also accused of using the police vehicles’ fuel refilling cards to buy fuel worth more than Dh10,000 and committing traffic law violations amounting to Dh2,600 in fines.

Court records show that the defendant took possession of the police vehicles in July last year.

The defendant, who was an employee of the Department of Cancellation of the General Department of Operations of Dubai Police, was in charge of cancelling registration of police vehicles and their fuel refilling cards before the vehicles are auctioned. Instead of carrying out the cancellation procedures, he allegedly took a four-wheel drive for himself and gave a car to his father who worked as a driver with the police.

The police came to know of the alleged wrongdoing after they got information that the defendant’s father was using a civil car. “We watched him and saw him driving the car to go to work at the Al Qusais police station and return home,” a major at the police told prosecutors. “When we asked him how he got that car, he admitted that his son had given it to him as the latter worked for the Cancellation Department. The man also told us that his son was using a four-wheel drive which also belonged to the police,” he said.

Another officer said the defendant’s father had been a driver with the police for 29 years. “He knew that civil cars are allowed only for officers of some departments.”
