The discovery of the Swiss professor of experimental immunology and winner of the Nobel Prize in 1996, revolutionised medicine and awarded researchers a clearer understanding of the workings of the immune system.

“This discovery can strengthen the immune system against pathogens, some forms of cancer, and decrease infections in a number of immune diseases such as chronic joint infections and diabetes,” explained Dr Zinkernagel.

The challenges currently facing researchers in immunology are slow onset diseases, which the immune system is not able to efficiently overcome. These include tuberculosis, leprosy and HIV, which have no vaccines.
