The municipality had recently ordered the shifting of single workers from residential areas to industrial areas.

It had distributed circulars to companies that had labour accommodation in residential areas, instructing them to move to industrial areas.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Mohammed Abdul Wahab, head of Regularity Committee of Workers’ Accommodations, said 70 per cent of the companies had followed the municipality’s instructions and moved out, but the remaining had ignored the municipality’s warnings.

The municipality had a month ago published an announcement in the local gazette for contractors, real estate companies and landlords, who had accommodations in residential areas, asking them to settle the matter.

The announcement said failure to heed the municipality’s warnings would result in discontinuation of utility services and fines of up to Dh100,000 in case of repeat violations.

He pointed out that the committee conducted surprise visits to these accommodations and found they were not even following municipality regulations despite having received several warnings and a grace period.

About the alternative accommodation for labourers, Khalifa Abdullah Al Falasi, head of the Buildings Section in Ajman Municipality said the municipality has already constructed labour accommodations in the Al Jarf industrial areas.
