No UK meat found in Abu Dhabi markets

ABU DHABI — Following the reported outbreak of foot and mouth disease among cattle in the UK, the Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA) has carried out inspections throughout the emirate and confirmed that cattle meat from the UK was not available in Abu Dhabi’s markets, an ADFCA official told Khaleej Times yesterday.

The ADFCA official said, “our inspectors have thoroughly checked the market and found no cattle meat from the UK.”

The UAE on August 6 imposed a temporary ban on the import of all live clovenhoofed animals and their products from the UK following the discovery of the cases of the disease there. The latest outbreak of the disease in the UK was first confirmed six days ago.

It may be noted that the ban on importing cattle products, including beef, from the UK to the UAE has been in effect since 1990.

The UAE’s Ministry of Environment and Water has issued a new ordinance in this regard to continue the ban due to the disease.
