In a new move, Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC) announced that children born to Omani mother married to an expatriate, will be exempted from paying tuition fees of public schools.
The announcement comes after a discussion between OHRC members and the Ministry of Education officials, reported Times of Oman. It is reported that OHRC began mulling over the issue after Omani women married to expats, urged the Ministry of Education to exempt their children from paying tuition fees.
The move comes in line with Decree No. 34/2018 issued by the Ministry of Education which details the fee requirements for services provided to students, including non-Omani students enrolled in government schools.
A statement from the OHRC said: "The commission submitted a report to the Ministry of Education to address the issue in accordance with the provisions of Basic Law of the State, Child Law and the two conventions (the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and the Convention on the Rights of Child)."
