No restrictions on media: Mohammed

DUBAI - His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has said that the people of the UAE are proud of the achievements made in all walks of life.

Shaikh Mohammed was talking to chief editors and representatives of UAE-based local and foreign newspapers and news agencies at Zabeel Palace on Saturday evening.

Members of the media extended Ramadan greetings to Shaikh Mohammed.

Shaikh Mohammed discussed with members of the media several political, economic and regional issues. The discussion focused on the freedom of expression and constructive criticism.

Shaikh Mohammed said: “Our achievements complement those of fellow Arab countries.”

Shaikh Mohammed affirmed that the authorities in the UAE did not impose any restrictions on information or news about economic and financial issues.

“My directives to these authorities are clear and beyond any questioning as we rely on candour and transparency. We strongly believe that media is the mirror of the nation. It has a noble message to disseminate and to enlighten the public, away from exaggeration, bias and distortion of facts. Media is the nation’s voice. The sun cannot be blocked by a sieve,” he added.

Members of the media praised the numerous initiatives taken by Shaikh Mohammed and his keenness to provide a wider space for freedom and transparency in dealing with the local, regional and international media.

The meeting was held in presence of Crown Prince of Dubai Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Deputy Ruler of Dubai Shaikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Also present on the occasion were Chairman of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Culture & Arts Authority Shaikh Majid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Shaikh Mansour bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Labour Minister and Chairman of the National Media Council Saqr Ghobash, Minister of State Reem Ibrahim Al Hashemy and Media Escort to Shaikh Mohammed Ahmed Abdulla Al Sheikh.
