No leniency for violations

THE sharp drop in the number of red traffic light violations within the first five months of 2006, as compared to the same period last year, clearly shows that a strict implementation of the law by the traffic police and tight surveillance is beginning to pay off — especially where heavy vehicle drivers are concerned.

In fact, the message is now being delivered loud and clear to all motorists and road users that there is no room for leniency with law-breakers when it comes to such crucial aspects of public safety.

Meanwhile, it also needs to be pointed out that simply possessing a heavy vehicle driving licence is not enough. These drivers also need to be fully aware of the kind of vehicles they are driving, the corresponding risks and hazards involved in driving such heavy duty vehicles, and the need to be extremely cautious when they move in heavy traffic on the roads and highways. Their driving habits must be strictly monitored because they can easily endanger other road users and even a momentary lapse can result in a serious or fatal accident.

As such, we advocate that other motorists must cooperate with the police patrol units and immediately report the licence number plates of those they spot violating traffic laws.
