(RAK) last week were a blessing in disguise as they exposed the violations of civil defence rules.

Had the fires not occurred, the violations would have continued undetected. The official agencies concerned like the economic department, municipality and labour office should ensure that the companies have complied with all the safety requirements in the labour camps.

In case the conditions are not met, licences issued to these companies must be suspended, and a grace period should be given to them to rectify the irregularities, failing which their licences should be cancelled.

Private companies must comply with the rules and regulations on the safety standards and industrial security.

It would not be fair if companies committed to maintaining safety standards in labour camps are treated on a par with firms, which violate the safety norms.
