New Tunnel, Bridge to Help Ease Traffic in Sharjah

SHARJAH - The Culture and Flying Saucer square-like roundabouts in Sharjah which was converted into a tunnel and a bridge by the Sharjah Directorate of Public Works (DPW) will be inaugurated on August 8 as scheduled, 
it was announced.

The work started in September, 2007, and has cost Dh433 million to help ease the traffic flow between the airport and Al Wahada Street.

Shaikh Khalid bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Member of the Executive Council and the Director General, DPW said, “The total cost of the project till the end of June, 2008 reached Dh433 million. Motorists can finally use the bridge and the tunnel constructed on the square and we urge them to abide by the road diversions that will be used till the completion of the whole project. We have almost completed 40 per cent of work on the fly over bridge that comes as part of Al Wahda road renovation project. The flyover will comprise of two lanes in both directions starting from the Al Yarmouk intersection till Abu Shaghara and towards Al Wahda road.”

Shaikh Khalid added that 30 per cent of work has been completed on the tunnel located near Liberty Company and that the traffic signals will be installed at Abu Shaghara intersection.

“The Al Wahda road and the flyover project will enable smooth movement of traffic at King Abdul Aziz square (Abu Shaghara) and Shaikh Juma bin Mohamed Al Mutawaa square (Al Yarmouk),” he said.
