Another 35 taxis operated by Al Hamrah taxi operators in Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) are expected to be on the roads by next week, bringing the number of new taxis in RAK to 60. “Of these, 10 would be exclusively for families and the rest 50 will be for the general public,” said Colonel Nasser Sultan Al Muraddad, chairman of RAKTA.
RAKTA has also signed agreement with Al Arabia and Cars taxi operators of Sharjah and Dubai, for operating taxi services in RAK under the aegis of Al Hamrah taxi operators.
Col. Al Muraddad signed the agreement with Ahmed Abdullah Al Gurair, board member of Cars taxi and Sultan Bin Majid Al Qasimi, representative of Al Arabia taxi in the presence of Shaikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah.
Abdullah Mohammed Alawadi, director general of RAKTA said the introduction of new taxis was aimed at improving transport services for the growing population in the emirate.
“The development of various sectors of the economy, including tourism, industries, real estate, housing and finance institutions and other private businesses have led an increase in the emirate’s population, which requires expanded transport services,” he noted.
Alawadi said RAKTA had already drawn plans to introduce 1,600 new taxis in RAK under three taxi operators which would replace the existing 1,300 old taxis by the end of 2009.
Alawadi added that RAKTA was also mulling the introduction of bus services in the emirate.
