The source told Khaleej Times that the current taxies will be phased out and their owners will be given a life-long compensation of Dh1000 a month. However, the compensation will not be paid to heirs in case of their death.

''The project will be executed by a private company which will own 5,000 to 8,000 cabs with a capacity for four to seven passengers,'' he said, adding that the meter will start from Dh2.5 and a dirham will be charged for each kilometre instead of the current fare of Dh2.5 per kilometre.

''The new cabbies will be stationed at different parks in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. They will not ply the streets looking for passengers. Rather, a passenger will call the company, giving his/her location and the time the service is to be availed. On coming out, the passenger will find the taxi waiting,'' he explained.

According to the source, the new service will hopefully ease traffic congestion on Abu Dhabi roads, save a lot of money spent on the current traffic of taxi in search for passengers and reduce environmental pollution caused by gas emission.

The source also announced that there are plans to launch 250 buses for a public transport service to serve the community across the Abu Dhabi emirate.
