New facilities for special needs students

ABU DHABI — As part of its preparations for the new academic year 2007-2008, Zayed Higher Organisation for Humanitarian Welfare, Special Needs and Minor Affairs will inaugurate three new units to provide better services for students with special needs, according to Mohammed Fadil Al Hamili, Deputy Chairman of the Organisation. The new facilities are anticipated to be opened with the start of the academic year in September.

He hailed the continuous and full support and assistance provided by the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, for people with special needs to help them lead an easy and normal life.

Hamili said the Organisation has ensured the availability of books, teaching staff and technical devices required by special needs students, in prepartion for the coming academic year scheduled to commence next month.

Elaborating on the new units, Mariam Saif Al Qubaisi, Head of Special Needs Sections at the Organisation, said the facilities include an early intervention unit at Al Ain Centre for the phyically challenged and two comprehensive assessment and physio-therapy units at the Abu Dhabi Rehabilitation Centre.

“These facilities will better cater for students with the advance of the new academic year because it will provide school children with educational and curative services,” said Al Qubaisi.

She mentioned that all the centres which are affiliated to the Organisation, will conduct a training programme for teaching staff on implementation of quality and distinction performance at work.

“This training programme aims to secure a level of competence for the teaching staff who must acquire special talents and techniques in dealing with students with different disabilities,” she said.
