Emran Ali Emran, Head of the Safety and Security Department, told Khaleej Times that natural and man-made disasters are common problems occurring almost everyday and are adversely affecting the surrounding environment. “With the help of the trained staff of the department we will curb the incidence of such catastrophes.”

Listing the main responsibilities of the newly established department, Mr Emran explained that it included protection of the main premises of the authority, its branches and the equipment available. In addition, the department would also guarantee protection against any intentional human accidents such as robbery, fire, destruction and water pollution.

Mr Emran said: “In cooperation with Sharjah Police and the coastguards, we will be able to offer a 24-hour security at Al Layyah Power Generation and Water Desalination and the Wasit Power Station along with other important stations in Khorfakhan and Kalba.”

He added: “The professional seamen of our department will cooperate with the coastguards to contain the spread of oil spills caused by passing ships. The oil spills are having a hazardous effect on the surrounding environment and on human health so they should be controlled immediately.”

The department will join hands with other departments like civil defence and the municipality to play a significant role in preserving the environment and protecting human beings from unpleasant accidents that could jeopardise their lives.
