New academic year will begin on Sept 2

DUBAI — The Minister of Education, Dr Hanif Hassan, has approved the new academic schedule for public and private schools under ministry curricula for the school year 2006-2007.

The new academic year starts on September 2 for students at all levels while the administrative staff and newly-appointed teachers resume duty on August 19. Regular teachers will commence the year on 26 August.

The Minister, who made these remarks exclusively to two Arabic daily papers and Khaleej Times, said the end of year examinations would begin on May 27. Secondary schools students will sit for exams on June 12 and final results will be announced on the last day of the academic year and start of summer vacation on July 4, 2006.

“Start and end of mid-term vacation will remain unchanged but the the duration of exams which remains 22 days (11 days equally for each term) will be reconsidered. These days will be utilised for purposes other than just exams,” he disclosed.

“ The 10-day increase in the school days to 179 days has been done on the instructions by the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and General Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Education Council, to make the school days comply with modern schools in European countries in order to better serve the educational process,'' he explained.

The minister said that the early resumption of duty by the administrative staff is aimed at setting the stage to welcoming students.

Newly appointed teachers, he noted would also report to school on that date to get acquainted with policies, regulations and curricula.
