Network of volunteers vital in Arab countries

SHARJAH - The Fourth Conference on voluntary work organised by the Emirates Volunteers Association (EVA) on Sunday, concluded yesterday with a call to establish an investment endowment fund to spend on voluntary activities, besides a recommendation to map out a strategy for the voluntary work.

The participants at the conference hailed the efforts made by His Highness Dr. Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah in supporting all the social service organisations and thanked him for his patronage of the annual conference.

The participants recommended the need for cooperation between the experts in voluntary work and the scientific research centres and universities to study the best methods of managing the voluntary work, as well as means of attracting and training volunteers in addition to listing the fields where voluntary work is mostly required.

The conference concluded with a recommendation to benefit from the experiences of commercial and business enterprises in sponsoring voluntary work activities, besides a suggestion to introduce a website on the Gulf voluntary work. The participants felt the need for carrying out a number of voluntary projects every year along side with the conference, and stressed that it was important to adopt the successful voluntary experiences at the regional, Arab and international levels.

Among the recommendations made at the conference the need for legislations to organise the voluntary work and ensure the participation of workers in the public and the private sectors and to secure the social, psychological and economic environment for the volunteers, besides protecting their rights in case of injuries or losses and offer them medical facilities and scholarships. The role of the media in inculcating the concept of voluntary work was highlighted by the participants

Nine working papers were presented over the two days of the conference including a paper on the role of UAE Red Crescent in conducting humanitarian and charity activities in the disasters hit countries, another paper on the role of volunteers of UN programme in international Voluntary work, in addition to a paper on the role of volunteers in protecting environment presented by Sharjah Environment and Protected Areas Authority, among several other papers.
