P.V and her sister B.M. had approached the embassy and complained of low wages, excessive work and lack of rest.

They expressed their desire to return to Nepal.

The two came to Abu Dhabi in 2007 to work with an Emirati family.

The embassy requested the sponsor to allow the housemaids to return home.

Later, the mission approached the Abu Dhabi Naturalisation and Residency Department for cancelling their work visas and sending them back to their country.

"The officials in the Immigration department helped us in solving the problem," the source said.

At the request of the embassy, Yeti Airlines, the national carrier of Nepal which flies to Abu Dhabi, provided free tickets for the maids, the source added.

An embassy official said, "The amount and nature of the work must be commensurate with the wages of housemaids and the working conditions.

"However, the labourers and housemaids should know their rights, about their work and working conditions as well."

The employers need to treat the maids in a friendly manner because the domestic helpers work with them as a family member, the official added.

Regarding the recruitment of housemaids, the official said, "Our government does not encourage sending women to work as housemaids. We don't have any plan to fix any salary for skilled and semi-skilled workers."
