Need to confront ‘labour mafia’

WE HAVE read and heard of statements made by officials in the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs confronting violators of labour recruitment regulations — the ‘labour mafia’ as these undesirable elements are termed. Especially, after the mafia went too far by posting their contact numbers at places where workers gather, indicating that the mafia was the link between workers and those looking for cheap labour; that a visa or any other official document could be arranged for and that workers would get paid higher wages under their sponsorship.

The ministry had not let this out till some members of the mafia fell into its net. But the way it looks, even this has not put a stop to the activities of the mafia. Workers continue to be illegally recruited, and housemaids continue to work part-time in houses other than that of their sponsor’s. And if it is a case of a runaway housemaid, then it is part-time in more than one household.

The labour ministry should immediately confront the mafia with all the powers vested in it. For, there is no room for a mafia in the UAE, labour or any other.
