In a statement to official news agency Wam, Mohammed Ahmed Al Zaabi said the e-gate service would be added to the card for Dh150, without the need to present documents. It can be renewed after two years, provided the holder’s passport is valid for at least six months.

National ID cards will carry biometric data such as fingerprint and face scans, passport and visa details.

Major General Ahmed Nasser Al Raisi, director general of the Central Operations at the General Headquarters of Abu Dhabi Police and board member of the Emirates Identity Authority, said on Monday the unfied card could also be used to access public and private sector services.

“The addition of the e-gate service to the identity card has provided a number of merits, among (them) activation of the identity card’s role as a comprehensive, unified document (that) facilitates services to save time and effort,” he said.

Khaleej Times reported in January that the airport e-gate cards, held by about 100,000 residents, would be replaced by national identity cards. All residents must obtain the card by the end of 2010.
