An Indian court granted bail to opposition leaders Sonia and Rahul Gandhi minutes after they arrived at a Delhi court on Saturday over allegations they illegally acquired a newspaper's assets.

"Bail was granted, the matter stands adjourned until February 20," defence lawyer R.S. Cheema, who was inside the courtroom, told reporters.

Hundreds of police and paramilitaries stood guard outside the Patiala trial court as the Congress party leaders, scions of India's most famous political dynasty, drove in.

After proceedings lasting about 20 minutes a magistrate granted the pair bail on a personal bond of INR 50,000 ($754) each, the lawyer said.

Sonia Gandhi's daughter, Priyanka Gandhi, and former defence minister A.K. Antony provided personal sureties.
